Our craft

We design backwards from the cut.

Most kitchen brands start with a shape and work towards a price. We start at the contact point — the few hundredths of a millimetre where steel meets food — and let that decide the steel, the grind, the balance and the handle.

How we got here

A short history of a narrow obsession.

  1. 2024

    One knife, one question

Kerf started as a single chef knife made to answer a narrow question: why do most home knives wedge instead of slice? The answer was geometry, not marketing.

  2. 2025

    The range fills in

A board that does not blunt the knife. A stone to maintain it. Shears that come apart to be cleaned. Every addition had to justify counter space.

    Where you already shop

We list on Amazon, Walmart and eBay instead of running a checkout of our own — better delivery, familiar returns, and we stay focused on making the tools.

Materials

Four materials, chosen for one reason each.

We publish what everything is made of because the specification is the product.

X50CrMoV15 stainless
Ice-hardened to 58 HRC. Hard enough to hold a fine edge through a long service, soft enough that you can bring it back on a stone at home rather than sending it away.
FSC hard maple
Stood on end so the blade parts the fibres rather than cutting across them. It costs more to make and takes longer to dry, and it is the only reason an end-grain board stays flat.
Stabilised birch
Resin-impregnated under vacuum so the handle does not swell, crack or loosen around the tang after a few hundred washes.
Neodymium N42
A continuous magnet core in the rail rather than a row of discs, so there is no dead spot where a knife slides off the wall.

Responsibility

The most sustainable tool is the one you keep.

We do not run a take-back scheme or print a leaf on the box. What we do is make tools that can be repaired and re-sharpened, and sell the stone that does it at close to cost.

Handles are replaceable. Boards can be resurfaced. The rail outlasts the kitchen it is mounted in. Wood is FSC certified, packaging is moulded pulp and paper tape, and there is no plastic window in the box.

If a Kerf tool fails because of how we made it, we replace it for as long as you own it — which is the least wasteful policy we know how to write.
